In the 1940s Playa Vista was home to Hughes Aircraft Company, owned by the billionaire aviator Howard Hughes. The Spruce Goose, the world's largest airplane measured by wingspan, was built here. Today it's becoming the new tech hub for Los Angeles, with massive offices for Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, Entertainment Arts, YouTube, The Honest Company, and a number of startups.

This population of technology companies has made it the southern anchor to the strip of neighborhoods including Venice and Santa Monica that make up LA's "Silicon Beach." To support the job growth a number of residential condos and apartment complexes have been built so you can walk or bike to the office. Along with the build-up of housing are new shops, restaurants, a massive cinema, and grocery stores.

Jefferson Boulevard is the main road through Playa Vista and most of this new development runs alongside it. To the northwest you'll find the older part of the neighborhood which has wide residential streets with modest single-family homes.

Playa Vista is bordered on the north by Del Rey, on the east by Culver City, on the south by Westchester, and on the west by Playa del Rey.
